APIAVote 2004
Situation
Summary background of the organization
APIAVote began as the 1996 National Asian Pacific American Voter
Registration Campaign. It was comprised of national organizations
just becoming conscious of the need to politically mobilize the
APIA community. Their goals highlight increasing APIA participation
in the American democratic system as well as America at large, that
they are a viable voting block.
Obstacles
The communication challenges faced
Due to lack of resources, much of the momentum and engagement generated
from election-year activities in 1996 and 2000 dwindled during off-campaign
years and virtually halted any efforts forwarded in the past. As
a result, this group faces an uphill battle, of particular importance
because of the swing status of the Asian Pacific Islander voters.
In addition, as a nonpartisan organization, they are a resource
that is faced with tactical issues, as they are politically neutral
in a particularly volatile political climate of the 2004 presidential
election.
Solution
The steps and solution taken by the CreateAThon team
In an effort to encourage people to register, get involved in the
process, and get out to vote, a sophisticated web site geared towards
the youth initiative was selected as the key design project to focus
on. This direction was taken due to the technological savvy of the
youth segment within their key demographic. The site features e-postcards,
ready and available for the web visitors to send to friends to encourage
voting behaviors. In addition, blog technology was installed in
the site, allowing the group to post information about their campaign
and receive responses.
