The Family Place
Situation
Summary background of the organization
This community center focuses on providing resources such as emergency services, home visitation and case management, and education classes to Hispanic immigrant families, specifically those with expecting mothers and young children.
Obstacles
The communication challenges faced
Inconsistencies among materials, in addition to some informational disorganization, hampered program users and donors’ understanding of the organization. In addition, the board had identified a need to revitalize their message to gain interest from both internal and outside parties. Lack of space to serve an increased need of their services is paramount. Meanwhile, the organization has recognized an obligation to serve audiences outside their current Latino group, but has no room to help them.
Solution
The steps and solution taken by the CreateAThon team
The consultant team began by laying out a plan to work with the board to inform and guide them, using several tactical plans already in possession by the group. In addition, the group suggested ways to communicate with the gay and lesbian communities as a potential volunteers and eventually be donors. In addition, the consultants discussed possible slogans to raise awareness that the shortage of space was getting to a crisis level. “A lack of space = less family learning…support A Family Place by…” was discussed as a possible angle. By developing an information packet with strong visual and thematic consistency, the design team managed to include information on history, mission, achievements, and programs. The packet features an information sheet, brochure, and individual sheets on each specific program.
